Robert Brown was a devoted and active member of the flute community in South Australia, volunteering in many organisations throughout his lifetime. He was involved with the Adelaide Eisteddfod Society from 1981, serving as the Convenor of the Flute and Woodwind Divisions. His participation extended to the Music Teachers’ Association of South Australia (MTASA), where he took on multiple roles over the years, and he also hosted flute programs on 5MBS, sharing his enthusiasm for the instrument with a wider audience.
Robert served on the Flute Society of South Australia committee for more than 40 years since its inception by Professor David Cubbin in 1972. He held several key positions, including Secretary, Membership Secretary, Public Officer, Vice-President, and President, eventually being recognized as a Vice Patron and Honorary Life Member for his dedication to the Society.
His meticulous approach was evident in how he managed committee practices and kept detailed historical records. He prioritized maintaining strong membership numbers, which he successfully did by organising the committee to personally connect with all of its members. Notably, he also undertook the role of establishing and producing the South Australian Flute News from 1979, providing a needed platform for sharing news and information within the flute community.
In recognition of his significant contributions, Robert was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2019 for his Service to the Community through Music.
Robert passed away in July 2021. We will always remember him as someone who spent his whole life serving our flute community with passion and commitment.
